Dr. Joël ClaveauSkin cancers and photoaging are well known adverse effects of UV exposure. Dermatologists around the world have been recommending sunprotection for more than 20 years. Many ways exist to protect our skin against UV radiations but studies have shown that the population considers sunscreens as the preferred method. However, people don’t protect their skin very well, they don’t know the different types of sunscreens, they don’t understand the SPF and they don’t use other methods. In fact, people are still burning, aging their skin and develop more and more skin cancers. Many organic (chemical) and inorganic (physical) molecules have been developed over the years and are incorporated in the formulation of sunscreens. The development of an effective, reliable and cosmetically acceptable sunscreen is an art and need a great expertise. In this presentation, we will underline the importance of increasing awareness of the population and physicians to a good photoprotection. We will also review the different types of physical blocks and their role in the formulation of sunscreens.
